Water
The ripple effect: how clean water transforms lives in Oloonkolin
Bringing water sources closer to homes and schools set off a ripple effect: better health, more children in class and greater economic independence.

Water is the foundation of all life. Yet for many communities in rural Kenya, access to clean drinking water has long been a daily struggle. This article shows how targeted water, sanitation and hygiene projects are reshaping daily life in Narok County.
By bringing sustainable water sources closer to homes and schools, Ndinda Foundation and its partners set off a ripple effect: better health, higher school attendance and greater economic independence.
The challenge
Before the project, women and children in Oloonkolin spent hours every day walking to distant, often contaminated water sources. The journey exposed them to waterborne disease and kept children out of school.
Our approach
The solution was not just digging wells, but combining technology with community ownership.
- Solar-powered pumps: reliable, eco-friendly water extraction without expensive fuel.
- Community training: local water committees maintain and manage the water sources.
What it achieved
- 3 to 4 hours saved every day
- Fewer waterborne diseases
- School attendance up 45%
We no longer lose our mornings walking to the river. The water is here, and our children are in classrooms.
The project shows how targeted investment in infrastructure unlocks a community's potential. It was delivered by the Oloonkolin Foundation, with Ndinda Foundation as a partner.
